July 14

Poetry and Open Mic July 14

My first time at Open Mic night at A and Z Books

(By Naomi Rickman, North Platte)

There were many people and lots of chairs

It was my first time at one of these nice affairs

It wasn’t Barnes and Noble or Borders of Omaha

No it was North Platte’s own poets’ and writers’ hurrah

With some of the nicest music I ever heard

Denny with his cool blues guitar,

Martin with his writings and art

Who was that boy with the big jump start?

He writes it and tells it and puts it out fine

Then there was Matt whose thoughts inspire

Ms. Welch set us back on our seats

Nothing I’ve heard much has her beat

Oh yes the lady from Hayes Center

I’m sure glad I got to meet her

She makes you smile for a little while

And, then there’s the cowboy poet

What he’s talking about, he sure does know it.

I’m not a poet and this will show it

Just wanted to say I’m glad I came

Coming next time will be my aim

Our town has to take a pat on the back

Compared with the bigger cities, I see no lack

I was nicely surprised and felt so complete

To have been a part of this retreat.

(A big thank you, Sharon)

Poetry and Open Mic Night this Friday, June 9th

The Unwritten
W.S.Merwin

Inside this pencil
crouch words that have never been written
never been spoken
never been taught

what script can it be
that they won't unroll
in what language
would I recognize it
would I be able to follow it
to make out the real names
of everything
maybe there aren't
many
it could be that there's only one word
and it's all we need
it's here in this pencil

every pencil in the  world
is like this

Don't let your words be unspoken even if they are only written on a used napkin or store receipt!  Come share them with the gang this Friday nite at A-Z Books.  George Lauby  from the North Plattte Bulletin will emcee whatever script any of us care to share.  Invite any friends or neighbors to join in the fun.  It starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until the store empties out. Hope to see you here!
